ahem. this is my inaugural "post". hullo? is there anyone out there?

Our Medium account has been reinstated.

Thanks to everyone who offered to help with hosting our blog elsewhere. We were already planning to set up our own thing for various reasons (including Medium's complete lack of support for translations). Of course we'll toot a link to our new blog as soon as it's up.

Today's lesson: Medium is bad. They've suspended our account and blocked access to all our published stories for bogus reasons and with only 12 hours notice.

I don't think the people on Mastodon or the fediverse in general are better/nicer/superior to people on other platforms.

People are basically the same everywhere, and your experience with those people is a lot more about who you are and what you bring to the interaction than because of who they are.

I do not have this sentiment often, but for algebraic geometry, I *wish* there was a book "algebraic geometry by examples", that for every piece of theoretical edifice, as it is built up, walks the reader through one useful application of it ("application" in the math sense).
